Snakebites are one of the leading causes of human-wildlife conflict deaths in India—especially among marginal farmers in rural Bengal. Most bites occur during monsoon, when barefoot farmers unknowingly encounter snakes in overgrown fields. Recognizing this preventable hazard, SHER launched a pilot project on World Snake Day, July 16, 2021, to mitigate human-snake conflict. Based on field studies and rescue efforts, 100 farmers and agricultural labourers across Haripal Block, Hooghly district, were equipped with sturdy gum boots and protective gloves—covering the most vulnerable areas where snakebites usually occur. The initiative aims not only to reduce conflict and save lives, but also to promote awareness about the ecological role of snakes and foster safer coexistence in rural ecosystems.
