SHER provides LPG kits to Sundarban fishermen to prevent human-Tiger conflict.

Following Cyclone Amphan & Yaas, SHER identified increased forest dependency and rising human-Tiger conflict risks in the Sundarbans. Fishermen in groups, often spending days inside tiger habitats, rely on earthen stoves fueled by dry firewood—scarce in the Sundarbans’ wet, humid climate.

This compels them to enter forests to collect dry firewood with sharp tools, increasing the risk of tiger encounters causing injury to both tigers and humans. To address this, SHER initiated a conflict mitigation project providing portable LPG cylinders to BLC-licensed fishermen, reducing their dependency on forest firewood. This ensures relatively safer fishing practices, prevents intrusion into forests, and minimizes conflict risks that strengthens community engagement in conservation.
